Walls to Ink

Wave Tutorials

Normal Tide

General Tips

  • Always paint walls and areas around the basket before the wave starts.
  • If mobile bosses spawn at the beginning you can throw bombs or shoot lessers from a distance with long range weapons while you wait for them to get closer to basket.
  • Stalling bosses far away and quota management should be monitored closely. If teammates are stalling bosses either help them splat the bosses to get back to the objective or if there are other bosses from another side use this time to lure and splat them close to basket. With more experience your decision making will improve in these situations and it will be reflected in winning games that previously may have been lost.

Map Specific

  • Start by painting the area around the basket, the ledges between the grates and the elevator walls in the pit area. Prioritise the elevator as it will facilitate egg running both for you and your teammates. It will also prevent a few deaths if someone’s left behind.
  • At the start of the wave stay back and stand at the spawn point if the first boss spawn is a Drizzler from the beach area, stay where you are and you can lure the Drizzler all the way to the back of the basket. As it approaches for the final jump try and shoot it while it’s in the air. If Drizzlers spawn to the left or right side you can move to the opposite side and they will jump to the upper level.
  • Luring is important but requires an effort from the entire team. It’s an opportunistic thing, lure if you get the chance but don’t rely on that in Freelance on this map in particular. It is preferable to work on quota slowly with far eggs than to wait at the basket for lures that won’t happen.
  • Multiple Drizzlers often spawn in the pit area and can send a lot of rain directly to the basket, so if there is a chance to splat them by sending their torpedo back at them take the opportunity. If nothing is coming to basket you can jump down and collect eggs, but don’t stall other bosses down there. The same principle can be used for multiple Flyfish that spawn in this area.
  • Drizzlers that spawn at the docks can jump to basket if no player is close by or by deflecting two torpedo cycles without splatting the Drizzler it will jump to the upper tier which can be useful. Same goes for a Drizzler that spawns in the pit just below the grates.
  • When Stingers spawn at the furthest dock on the left hand side and quota is not close to being met, it may be best to use Stingray to splat this early. It takes a long time to get to that area and return.
  • If a Scrapper is close by you can lure it onto the elevators and stun it with a few shots. Shoot the fan on the elevator to get to the other side and keep the fan pushed for a little longer and the Scrapper will move off the elevator onto the upper level.
  • Steelheads can also be lured onto the elevator if you jump down when it is close to the elevator. It will walk onto the elevator and if you shoot the fan it can walk onto the upper level. See Ricarnaldo's demonstration
  • If there is a potential pile up of bosses coming towards the basket it can be difficult to keep control. It may be wise to jump from the basket to the small platform in mid and splat bosses here to avoid a snowball.
  • Stingray is very strong on this map due to its linear nature, standing at the top of the spawn area and raying either straights can clear many bosses and Stingers that spawn at the beach.

Avoid

  • Avoid spending too much time at the bottom levels and stalling or splatting mobile bosses. Meeting quota can be a big problem on this map due to the fact that bosses can only approach the basket from two narrow entrances. So if you keep jumping down to the bottom levels it will be very difficult to lure bosses to the basket.
  • Common problem on this map can be trying to over-lure and eventually when the bosses to come to the basket the team is overwhelmed. Don't sit at the back of the basket and wait for too long it is okay to move out and splat bosses such as Steelheads and Steel Eels from the small platform in mid.
  • If teammates are stalling bosses at the bottom and there is no opportunity to lure them help splatting the bosses and avoid being inactive or spamming “This Way!”.
  • Don’t all bunch together in one area as you may miss lures or risk a snowball from the opposite side. Long range or low DPS weapons can stay near the basket.

High Tide

General Tips

  • Listen for the sounds of the tides changing so you don’t die to the rise of the tide.
  • Luring can be a lot more difficult or unnecessary at times here so prioritising slaying can be helpful to avoid snowballing.

Map Specific

  • At the start of the wave be sure to paint the perch wall and the walls for the small splatform at mid. Return to the basket before bosses spawn, if the first boss is a Drizzler, stand at the spawn point and the Drizzler will come all the way to the basket. You can shoot it during its jump to the basket for a quicker splat.
  • High Tide suffers from a similar problem as Normal Tide, the linear layout where spawns converge very early makes it difficult to lure here unless the entire team is on board with it. Again, it is more important to splat bosses swiftly, prevent snowballs and keep running eggs.
  • Take down Steel Eels as early as possible to prevent snowballs. If multiple Steel Eels show up you may get stuck at the basket for a while and be unable to deal with far spawns.
  • It’s important for weapons with great mobility to go out to Stingers or splat Flyfish as there is little space on this map and lessers can also pile up making it difficult for slower weapons to do this job as quickly.
  • Weapons with range should be aware of Drizzler torpedoes being launched from the far end of the map and also prioritise Steelheads as Steel Eel and Steelhead combinations at basket can be problematic.
  • If there are multiple Steel Eels or Steelheads approaching, jump from the basket area to the small platform in mid and splat them early to avoid a snowball. Splashdown can be very useful in this position.
  • If nobody is able to go out to splat Stingers and Flyfish then Stingray or Inkjet should be used to clear them. It’s useful to identify this threat early and take the initiative as soon as possible.
  • Stingray is very strong on this map due to its linear nature, standing at the top of the spawn area and raying either of the straights can clear many bosses and Stingers that spawn at the bottom.

Avoid

  • Do not spend too much time behind the basket trying to lure bosses as it is very easy to get overrun. Slaying bosses quickly is very important due to the linear nature of this map.

Low Tide

General Tips

  • If you need relief or want the Stingers to target you so teammates can take them out safely, use the back of the map if required.

Map Specific

  • To begin the wave paint the basket area and three paths then back up to see if a Drizzler is the first spawn. Move to the opposite direction to let it come to the basket.
  • Go out for Stingers and Flyfish when they show up and ideally, lure everything else. But don’t rely on luring. Assist your teammates when they engage bosses. It’s more important to run even far eggs than to force lures that may never happen if your teammates are not aware of these mechanics.
  • Always let Scrappers move towards the basket and expose their rear to your teammates. Don’t stop them in the middle of the lanes as it's difficult to get around and splat them.
  • Team work is important to clear the three paths, as many lessers and bosses can spawn from a single lane. Remember: Chargers deal piercing damage, they can deal a lot of damage here due to the linear nature of the paths. If there are many lessers with Steelheads behind them, splat the Steelheads earlier to prevent them from throwing their bombs. This will help to clear the lessers with their explosion.
  • If a snowball occurs and you are overrun it is possible to use the elevator to escape to the spawn point area and use the verticality to revive teammates from above and clear some bosses.
  • From the furthest points of the map it can take a long time to reach each side especially when Stingers spawn, if you are able to splat them the eggs may be better left ignored if the area is not safe. It can save time to splat Stingers or Flyfish with Stingray.

Avoid

  • Avoid spending too much time at the far ends of the map. If you splat Stingers here and the eggs look risky it is often best to ignore them and get back to the basket. If you die here it is a long way back.
  • Steelheads can be troublesome by lobbing their bomb at the basket from the narrow lanes. Long range weapons should not ignore Steelheads.

Goldie Seeking

General Tips

  • Start searching for the Goldie immediately, when there’s any downtime. Not looking for the Goldie quickly enough is one of the main reasons quota fails happen during Goldie seeking.
  • When searching for the Goldie, start with the gushers furthest away from the basket, then work your way inwards. Opening an incorrect gusher causes tons of lesser Salmonids to appear, which causes a lot of problems. Hitting further away Gushers minimizes the damage they can cause.
  • Rollers can be used in front of the Goldie to extract more eggs. Hold ZR and move your stick left and right slowly, especially strong with Dynamo and Flingza rollers. See: Roller Strategy by Marty
  • It can be difficult to meet quota depending on the Goldie RNG and if your teammates are opening all the gushers so specials are important in these scenarios. Bomb Rush, Inkjet and Splashdown can be used to clear out lessers and deal damage to the Goldie. Stingray is not very strong at clearing lessers and does deal decent damage to the Goldie if tracked accurately. Stingray can be useful in opening far gushers, saving you from going out to those gushers and finding the Goldie quicker if quota is struggling to be met.
  • Common practice in Goldie Seeking is to open far gushers alone so if you are in a squad the team should split up and after opening the first gusher the player should use "This Way!" if the gusher is high or "Booyah!" if the gusher is low so teammates on opposite sides can open their gushers. In Freelance this usually isn’t possible unless you are teamed with experienced players. So you will have to rely on yourself and some good luck.

Figure E

It is best to open gusher H first. Based on Figure E if gusher H is high then the Goldie is in F or D.

Figure F

Based on Figure F if gusher H is low then the Goldie is in A.

Avoid

  • Do not open gushers when the Goldie has already been found.
  • If gushers around you are low that indicates the Goldie is further away so do not open more gushers in that area.
  • Do not ignore lessers as it's very easy to get overwhelmed when multiple gushers are open.

Goldie Rush

General Tips

  • Be aggressive and keep shooting the incoming lines of Salmonids when you know you can. The moment the team stops their offensive pressure, the Chums and Goldies can easily overwhelm you and cause a team wipe very quickly. It’s very important to kill the Goldies especially.
  • If you have aggro (Glowflies on you) and you’re noticing that you won’t be able to take out the enemies coming at you alone, Jump onto a nearby painted wall to buy time for yourself and your team to survive, and get eggs in.
  • Roller type weapons should stay near the basket and keep rolling forward slowly to create a wall of defense for the team. This takes out all incoming chums and slows down/weakens Goldies for teammates to finish them off.
  • Splat and Tenta Brella users should launch their shield as much as possible to create a similar defensive wall effect, though slightly more limited.
  • Chargers deal piercing damage so shooting in straight lines can deal good damage.
  • To maximise damage spread from Sloshers, arch your shots a little higher to deal damage using the full range of the sloshes.
  • All four specials are very strong in this mode. If the Salmonids are coming straight on, Stingray is very useful. If you have Inkjet and the glowflies are targeting you this is the best time to use Inkjet as it is possible to splat Salmonids as they come up and move away from the eggs so your teammates can run eggs while you are targeted. Splashdown can be used if there is pile up of Salmonids which can occur especially after a player wall clings to delay their approach. When using Bomb Rush aim to the ground and throw the bombs close together as Salmonids come fast and you can also move around while throwing bombs in short spaces.

Map Specific

  • Stand by the right side of the basket in front of the grates when you have the Glowflies. Doing this will lead the Chums to the basket from just one lane and you want to avoid making them split on both left and right lanes. Don’t go too far back either!
  • A melee weapon can jump to the small platform in mid to shoot Chums. When the Glowflies switch to you, go back to the right lane.
  • If eggs fall to the bottom these can be ignored as it can be risky to leave your teammates or get rushed by chum if the Glowflies switch to you while at the bottom. If you die at the bottom it can be difficult to get revived.
  • On High Tide if Glowflies are targeting you, avoid standing behind the grates. If the targeted player is too far back, it is possible for Chums to approach from the left hand side. Ideally, the targeted player should be standing on the grates.

Figure A

For good positioning. Weapons with a fast fire-rate and good DPS should be in front. By allowing the Goldie to come closer at the shown angle the eggs can drop closer to the basket. The backliners/sweepers can shoot from afar and run basket eggs. See Figure A

Figure B

To maximise eggs and Goldie appearances, the earlier you splat Chums the faster Goldies will spawn in. If one or two players position themselves on the mid platform and only splat Chums, the backliners only have to deal with the Goldies and run eggs. See Figure B

Avoid

  • Do not stand on the left side of the basket always stay on the right where it is much easier to splat Chums and Goldies.
  • Do not stand at the spawn point behind the basket. This allows the lessers to come from different angles and easily overwhelm the team.
  • If eggs fall to the bottom it is often best to ignore them as teammates can get overwhelmed with one less player or the Glowflies could switch to you and get you splatted.
  • Wall clinging on this map is pointless as the walls are very short and it is easy to get splatted.

Cohock Charge

General Tips

  • Make sure at least one person is in a cannon at all times. If no one is in a cannon to shoot the incoming waves of Cohocks, the basket will get overwhelmed extremely quickly.
  • Prioritise Stingers and Flyfish. These bosses have a habit of targeting players in cannons and pinning them down, effectively disabling the use of the cannons altogether. Once the cannons are unusable, the wave is usually lost.
  • While luring in cannons or on the field splat or damage Cohocks but be wary of stunning Scrappers and slowing down the luring too much. If the basket area is getting overwhelmed then ignore luring until it is relatively clear.
  • Egg runners should be aware of Maws and Drizzler balloons so cannon users are protected. If egg runners see mobile bosses spawn you can wait and let them come closer.
  • Often it can be difficult to see a Maws approaching while in cannons so it is important to listen out for the sound that Maws makes as it approaches, jump out of the cannon until you find out who it is targeting. As an egg runner if you see a Maws targeting a cannon user try and splat the Maws with a splat bomb throw and then revive the player after.
  • You may have to give up on cannons to help run eggs if your egg runners are overstaying at the spawns.

Map Specific

  • One person should be in the top cannon at all times while the other 3 run eggs.
  • The cannon at top of the boat is the preferred one for this stage. It can reach any far spawn quite easily though it does not fare so well on bosses too close to the basket. So egg runners should be splatting these bosses.
  • The side cannons can deal with enemies at the basket and far enemies but may get zoned out by bosses.
  • When dealing with Flyfish, be sure to destroy the left side launcher first (Grey lid). That is the most likely one to target you and will usually prevent further missiles from zoning you out of the cannon.
  • It is a good habit to step out of the cannon during downtimes just to recover ink. Make sure you have enough ink to deal with the next spawn of Stingers or Flyfish so you aren’t forced out of the cannon. Also lets you watch out for Maws.

Avoid

  • If someone is already in cannons do not waste time by fighting over the cannons instead play your role as an egg runner. If you do take up a cannon do not constantly leave the cannon and let bosses and Cohocks pile up.
  • As an egg runner do not guard far eggs or spend too much time far away from the basket as this slows down lures and can cause problems meeting quota.
  • Cannon users should avoid splatting mobile bosses far from basket if possible.

Mothership

General Tips

  • Keep running eggs! In less experienced groups, if even a single player isn’t running eggs consistently, meeting the egg quota can become very difficult. It can become easy for players with longer range to get into a habit of doing nothing but shooting down coolers. This is only effective in very specific scenarios.
  • Split your team up to different parts of the map, to maximise the amount of coolers and eggs the team can handle. If one area isn’t covered by any player, coolers will start to pile up in that area which can cause issues.
  • Some blasters and the explosher can either clip the top of the Mothership or arch their shots on top of the Mothership for extra eggs when it is at basket.
  • As the Mothership is departing the basket and your weapon has enough range if you aim at the highest point in the centre it is possible to shoot a few more coolers.
  • Stingray is the best special for this mode, try and use Stingray when the Mothership is close to basket and ensure you aim for the top of the Mothership so you can splat coolers and damage the Mothership at the same time. Other players should look to protect the Stingray user if they need it and begin shooting the Mothership when the Stingray is about to expire so you get the maximum amount of eggs.
  • Eggs come from splatting the Chinook and not the cooler itself, this can be useful when you are slightly late to a cooler.

Map Specific

Normal Tide
  • In Normal Tide the easiest Chinooks to work with land in the middle of the boat. Most others land down on the shores. Those are slightly slower to run so only go for them if your teammates are doing a good job of covering the middle area.
High Tide
  • The greatest density of Chinook is on the far platforms. Definitely take down Chinooks within reach but deliver an egg as soon as you get one. Don’t overdo it!
  • There is also a number of Chinooks that land behind the basket. If you have a long range weapon don’t miss them!
Low Tide
  • Low Tide Mothership has the highest density of Chinooks on the right side and behind the basket, bordering on the Normal Tide beach. A long range weapon like Chargers, Splatlings, Rapid Blasters or the Jet Squelcher can take down Chinooks that would land on the Normal Tide beach while they fly over the basket. Having 2 people on the right, 1 cheesing and 1 alternate between back and left (to clear) is ideal.
  • Long range weapons should focus on the hill area and if you shoot coolers early while they are in the sky you can get the eggs to fall closer to the basket, especially easy with E-liter.
  • With Low Tide it is possible to use the verticality of the hill area to splat extra coolers when the Mothership is at the basket with weapons such as Rapid Blasters, the Explosher, the Jet Squelcher, longer range Splatlings and Chargers.

Avoid

  • When using Stingray aim for the top of the Mothership and not the hose/nozzle.
  • If it is wave 1 or 2 it may be best to Stingray the Mothership when it comes to basket the first time only if the quota can be easily met. So using 2 Stingrays may not be required and become useful in later waves.
  • Do not ignore lessers and let them pile up.
  • Do not use Stingray on the Mothership when it is far from the basket as those eggs will take a long time to run.

Grillers

General Tips

  • It is good to have one cleaner who focuses smallfry. This typically applies to most Brellas, Rollers, and Sloshers. In large numbers, Smallfries can cause massive problems during Grillers, and can stop your team from getting stuns effectively. Weapons with low damage, or rollers should especially be taking on this role.
  • If there are powerful long range weapons like splatling or charger their job is usually to focus stunning/shooting the Grillers. The other weapons can flex but be sure to help each other if smallfry are overwhelming.
  • When using slosher it is possible to arch your shots over the Griller and deal damage to the tail if you aim correctly.
  • If a pile up is occurring or the quota is struggling to be met, specials should be used. Stingray is very strong at stunning and splatting multiple Grillers if they are lined up. Inkjet can be used here and it’s often a good idea to hover over the basket with inkjet for extra elevation, safety and better angles. Splashdown is also strong at helping stun/splat Grillers and clear Smallfry.
  • Grillers can be lured away from basket to give players some time to collects eggs or clear Smallfry. This can also be used if players are getting splatted to give others time to revive them so they don’t get overwhelmed.
  • Always know where the Grillers are. Watch the red laser and who the Griller is targeting. This lets you know where the Griller plans to go, and allows you to avoid its path accordingly. If you lose track of where a Griller is, there’s a decent chance it’ll blindside you and take you out.
  • Keep stunning the Grillers! Don’t let up on the aggression towards the Griller tails and consistently shoot them. If a single Griller gets out of control on high tide, a team wipe or quota failure becomes extremely likely.

Map Specific

  • Try and keep the Grillers lured from the right side (lower slope where Grillers come from the pit or beach). One strategy is, if the Griller is targeting you, to stand on the right grates, then as it’s about to comes up towards the grates jump to the small platform in mid and shoot the tail. With this method the Griller ends up right next to the basket and the eggs are easily deposited.
  • Freelance players often use the platform in the middle to lure, which causes Grillers to turn towards the middle of the boat. This can be a safe way to take down Grillers after the quota is met, but the eggs can be difficult to run. Especially during High Tide.
  • Unlike other stages there are no safety walls next to the basket to cling to. Good positioning is your best option.
  • If the Griller spawns from left you can bring it towards the right by standing on the right grates, allowing you to setup for the strategy above. If the Griller target is already at the basket area stand on the small platform in mid and as the Griller passes by you, shoot the tail.
  • Stepping on an elevator will force Griller targets to change. Be extremely careful when doing this, a sudden target change will often go unnoticed and could easily cause a wipe.
  • If Grillers overwhelm you, and you are the target, lead them away from the basket without stepping on elevators. You may only need to go as far as the perch. Once they’re close, lead them back over the right grate.
Griller Positioning

Figure A

If a Griller spawns from either side it is possible to meet the Griller very early and stun it by moving behind it. This can allow you to run eggs early so quota may not be an issue later or maximise the potential egg total for the wave. See Figure A

Figure B

If a Griller spawns from the right and is targeting you, stand on the right grates and then as it’s about to come up towards the grates jump to the small platform in mid and shoot the tail. With this method the Griller ends up closer to the basket. Alternatively, you can all stand on the small platform in mid and splat it there but the eggs can be difficult to run with multiple Grillers and Smallfry. See Figure B

Figure C

If the Griller comes from either side another strategy is the targeted player can stay at basket and the other three can hang in mid and anticipate the stun on the Griller from there. See Figure C

Avoid

  • Do not lure Grillers behind the basket area as it can be very difficult to stun and can cause you to get wiped.
  • Don’t be too erratic with your movement causing the Grillers to splat your teammates. It is possible to wall cling temporarily to buy some time in certain situations.
  • Do not ignore smallfry especially if you have the strongest weapon for dealing with them.
  • When shooting the Grillers try to avoid body blocking each other’s shots by strafing or moving too much.

Fog

General Tips

  • Functions very much the same as regular Normal, High and Low Tides just with the addition of Goldies which should be lured to the basket. Try and identify them early and work on the lure while also being proactive with boss or lesser splats.
  • If you move close to the Goldie you can make it switch targets to you to help the luring process.
  • If the game is getting out of hand then don’t worry about luring Goldies and focus on quota and boss management instead.
  • As vision is impaired be on the lookout for Stingers, Flyfish and Drizzler torpedoes.

Map Specific

  • Goldie lures are fairly easy during Normal Tide. If you find a Goldie that’s managed to make it on to either of the 2 lanes that lead to the basket area then try and lure them right next to the basket. If Goldies are at the bottom try and tag them early so they target you.
  • Goldies can jump off the boat at the grates if they target someone on the shores. That is a massive time loss. If you see a Goldie crossing the grates stay close so it doesn’t jump ship.
  • Goldie lures can be difficult during High Tide. Due to the narrow lanes and Salmonids only being able to approach from one direction. Sometimes Goldies may get splatted early by a Steelhead explosion. This is better than a snowball occurring so do no not worry.
  • Goldie lures are easy during Low Tide. The lanes are quite wide so if a Goldie spawns from one area you can focus another while it approaches so if there are Steelheads near the Goldie they won't activate yet.

Avoid

  • Do not splat Goldies far from the basket, lure them at all times unless there is a snowball.
  • Avoid spending too much time at the bottom levels. Only visit the bottom areas to splat Stingers or run quick eggs that will not stall bosses at the bottom. It's very easy to get overwhelmed in the pit area especially.
